Why the Return to Nigeria Initiative

As Nigeria Student Ambassador, my role is to bridge the gap between Nigerians in the diaspora and the opportunities that exist at home. Through the Return to Nigeria Initiative (RTNI), I am working to raise awareness of the risks of irregular migration, promote informed decision-making among young Nigerians, and create structured pathways that connect returning professionals, entrepreneurs and skilled migrants with locally driven development projects across Nigeria.
A problem that demands urgent attention
Despite Nigeria's enormous potential, two persistent challenges continue to hold back progress.
Irregular migration persists
Thousands of Nigerians continue to pursue irregular migration routes, often due to limited awareness of the associated risks and a perceived lack of opportunities at home. The consequences — financial, physical and psychological — can be devastating.
Reintegration remains uncertain
Many Nigerians in the diaspora wish to return but are held back by uncertainty about sustainable reintegration pathways. Successful return requires more than a flight home — it requires access to meaningful economic and social opportunities.
A moment to act
Recent reforms to Nigeria's Local Government system have created a significant opening. LGAs now hold greater responsibility and autonomy to address community development priorities — and diaspora expertise is exactly what many of these communities need.
By connecting returning professionals and skilled migrants with locally driven projects, we can turn diaspora expertise into tangible community impact at the grassroots level.

Providing young Nigerians with the tools, networks and opportunities to build futures at home rather than seeking them abroad.
Entrepreneurship
Supporting returning Nigerians to establish businesses that create employment, stimulate local economies and demonstrate that home is a viable place to build a career.
Local Government partnerships
Working directly with LGAs to identify priority areas, facilitate returnee placements and ensure that reintegration efforts are embedded in local governance structures.
London to Nigeria — driving the message home
At the heart of the RTNI is a high-visibility overland journey from London to Lagos — a public awareness campaign that takes the message directly to Nigerian communities, diplomatic missions and partner organisations along the route.
The journey is not simply a physical feat. It is a statement — that the road home is worth taking, and that the opportunities waiting at the end of it are real.
